UCONN HEALTH WATERBURY HOSPITAL PARTNERS WITH CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S TO EXPAND NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE SERVICES

WATERBURY, CT, May 5, 2026 – UConn Health Waterbury Hospital and Connecticut Children’s today announced the expansion of neonatal intensive care services through a new partnership. This collaboration enables more newborns to receive advanced, specialized care closer to home.

Through this partnership, UConn Health Waterbury Hospital joins the largest regional network of NICUs staffed 24/7 by Connecticut Children’s specialists.

“Our goal in entering this partnership was to ensure that families in Greater Waterbury have access to the highest level of neonatal care at any time,” said UConn Health Waterbury Hospital President Deborah Weymouth. “This partnership with Connecticut Children’s brings nationally recognized expertise directly to our patients and strengthens our commitment to community-based care.”

The expanded capabilities allow the hospital to care for small or critically ill newborns during a time when every second counts.

“We are excited to care for these patients in Greater Waterbury. For families whose babies need a higher level of care, being able to stay close to home is a significant benefit,” said Dr. David Sink neonatologist and Regional Clinical Director of Neonatology at Connecticut Children’s. “Having access to local neonatal care allows parents to spend more time at their baby’s bedside, makes a challenging experience more manageable and supports overall outcomes during a critical stage of development.”

The NICU provides specialized care for infants born prematurely or with complex medical conditions. Under the clinical leadership of Connecticut Children’s, the unit now offers respiratory support, imaging, and access to a full range of pediatric subspecialties through Connecticut Children’s.

The NICU is staffed by Connecticut Children’s board-certified neonatologists, supported by a multidisciplinary care team that includes specially trained nurses, advanced practice providers, and lactation counselors, all with expertise in newborn care. The NICU is designed to ensure seamless, coordinated care within a supportive and healing environment. Each infant receives an individualized care plan developed in close collaboration with their family.

UConn Health Waterbury Hospital joined the UConn Health Community Network this past March. This expansion with Connecticut Children’s reflects UConn Health’s continued investment in maternal and child health and its mission to provide high-quality, accessible care to the Greater Waterbury region.
