Waterbury Hospital General Surgery Residency Program
Become a part of our family! The General Surgery Residency Program at Waterbury Hospital was established in 1947. The program is designed around resident education and the six ACGME competencies which form the framework for training and evaluation of our residents. Since the career goals of individual residents may differ, it is our goal to provide a general surgery experience that prepares residents for a productive and satisfying career in surgery.
We are pleased to announce that our residency is now sponsored by the Quinnipiac University Frank H Netter School of Medicine. We are affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine, the University of Connecticut and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. Our five-year general surgery program graduates two chiefs each year. The faculty includes six general surgeons, one colorectal surgeon and over 75 part-time attending faculty on its surgical specialty staff.
The last ACGME Accreditation Site Visit of the General Surgery Residency Program at Waterbury Hospital was held in 2017. The program attained continued accreditation from the Residency Review Committee for Surgery which functions in accordance with the policies and procedures of the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, www.acgme.org).
The Department of Surgery at Waterbury Hospital has a longstanding tradition of excellence in patient care, teaching and service to the community. One of the main advantages of a small community program is our ability to provide individualized feedback and instruction to our residents.
The Department of Surgery encompasses the Sections of General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Orthopedics and Urology are separate Departments. There are no fellowship programs at Waterbury Hospital and as a result, the residents’ operative experience is not diminished by competition with fellows. Our residents routinely scrub on ENT, plastic, vascular and thoracic cases. They are also welcome and occasionally scrub on urology, orthopedic and GYN cases.
The success of each resident is very personal to us. We are very proud of the career paths and accomplishments of our graduates and the Waterbury Hospital “family” we have fostered.
