UConn School of Medicine | Waterbury Hospital General Surgery Residency Program
The General Surgery Residency Program at Waterbury Hospital has trained surgeons since 1947. Our program is built around resident education and the six ACGME core competencies, which form the framework for training and evaluation. We prepare residents for productive, independent surgical careers — whether in academic medicine, subspecialty fellowship, or community practice.
We are proud to announce that our program is now sponsored by the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (UConn SOM). We maintain affiliations with Yale University School of Medicine and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Our five-year categorical program graduates two chief residents annually. The faculty includes six general surgeons, one colorectal surgeon, and over 75 part-time attending faculty across surgical specialties.
The last ACGME Accreditation Site Visit of the General Surgery Residency Program at Waterbury Hospital was held in 2017. The program attained continued accreditation from the Residency Review Committee for Surgery which functions in accordance with the policies and procedures of the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, www.acgme.org).
The Department of Surgery at Waterbury Hospital has a longstanding tradition of excellence in patient care, teaching and service to the community. One of the main advantages of a small community program is our ability to provide individualized feedback and instruction to our residents.
The Department of Surgery encompasses the Sections of General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Orthopedics and Urology are separate Departments. There are no fellowship programs at Waterbury Hospital and as a result, the residents’ operative experience is not diminished by competition with fellows. Our residents routinely scrub on ENT, plastic, vascular and thoracic cases. They are also welcome and occasionally scrub on urology, orthopedic and GYN cases.
The accomplishments of our graduates reflect the rigor and depth of training at Waterbury Hospital. We take pride in the breadth of career paths our alumni have pursued — from academic surgery and subspecialty fellowship to leadership roles in community and regional practice.
