They have almost all completed a residency program in general surgery. While some breast surgeons specialize as a result of their clinical practice and experience in general surgery, others have completed extra training either as surgical oncologists or through formal breast fellowships after general surgery training. In some areas of the country gynecologists are also breast surgeons.
