What is a Breast Surgeon?

Surgeons who concentrate most of their practice in the area of breast diseases are known as "breast surgeons." They have almost all completed a residency program in general surgery. While some breast surgeons specialize as a result of their clinical practice and experience in general surgery, others have completed extra training either as surgical oncologists or through formal breast fellowships after general surgery training. In some areas of the country gynecologists are also breast surgeons. Breast surgeons become facile in the use of minimally invasive techniques for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and practice in a multidisciplinary environment along with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and radiologists.
